About Silk and Satin

What is the difference between Silk and Satin?

This is the most common misconception in the bedding industry! To understand the difference, remember this simple formula: Fiber + Weave = Fabric.

  • Silk is the Fiber: It is a natural protein produced by silkworms (100% Mulberry Silk).
  • Satin is the Weave: It refers to the specific technique of weaving threads to create a glossy surface.

Our products are made of Silk Satin. This means we take the finest 100% Mulberry Silk fibers and weave them using a satin structure to achieve the ultimate luster and smoothness.

Why is my silk pillowcase shiny on only one side?

This is a hallmark of authentic Satin Weave (often called One-Side Satin). The technique involves "floating" the silk threads over several cross-threads to maximize light reflection on the front side. The back side remains matte, which is actually a benefit—it provides a slight grip so your pillow doesn't slide off the bed during the night.

Why does the weave matter for my sleep?

If you took silk fibers and used a different weave, like Organza or Taffeta, the fabric would be stiff or scratchy—definitely not something you’d want to sleep on. We specifically use the Satin Weave (Charmeuse) because it creates the smoothest surface possible, reducing friction on your hair and skin to prevent frizz and sleep wrinkles.

How does Silk Satin benefit my skin compared to "Satin" made of Polyester?

The difference lies in the Fiber.

  • 100% Mulberry Silk is a natural protein fiber containing 18 essential amino acids. It works in harmony with your skin's natural chemistry.
  • Polyester Satin is essentially plastic; it doesn't breathe and can irritate sensitive skin by trapping heat and bacteria.

Can sleeping on Silk Satin really prevent "Sleep Wrinkles"?

Yes! Because of the Satin Weave, the surface of the fabric is incredibly smooth with minimal friction. Unlike cotton, which "tugs" or "pulls" at your delicate facial skin as you move during the night, silk allows your skin to glide smoothly across the surface. This significantly reduces the formation of sleep creases and long-term fine lines.

I have dry skin. Will Silk help?

Absolutely. Cotton and other porous fabrics are designed to absorb moisture, which often means they suck the expensive night creams and natural oils right off your face. Silk Satin has low absorbency, meaning it helps keep your skin’s moisture—and your skincare products—exactly where they belong: on your skin.

Is Silk Satin suitable for acne-prone or sensitive skin?

It is the best choice. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mold. Furthermore, because silk is highly breathable, it prevents the "overheating" that can lead to clogged pores and inflammation. It provides a clean, cool, and friction-free environment for your skin to heal overnight.

Is your silk fabric "Skin-Safe"?

Quality is our priority. Our 100% Mulberry Silk is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified. This means every thread and dye used is tested for harmful substances and is confirmed safe for direct contact with your skin.

The Silk Buyer’s Guide

Why do silk pillowcases have such different price points?

It comes down to two main factors: The Weight (Momme) and The Quality (Grade). Two pillowcases might look identical in a photo, but the difference in how they feel and how long they last is determined by the grade of the silk strands and the density of the weave. Knowing how to read the specifications is the key to getting the best value for your money.

What is "Mulberry Silk" and why is it the best?

Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk available. It comes from silkworms raised in a controlled environment and fed an exclusive diet of Mulberry leaves. This results in silk threads that are:

  • Smoother: For a friction-free "Charmeuse" finish.
  • Stronger: Making the fabric more durable.
  • Uniform in Color: Giving the pillowcase a consistent, luxurious glow.

What does "Grade 6A" mean?

Silk is graded on a scale of A, B, or C, with A being the finest long-strand silk. These grades are further numbered. Grade 6A is the absolute pinnacle of silk quality—it is the longest, strongest, and most pearly-white fiber available. If a seller doesn't list a grade (e.g., 6A), you should assume they are using lower-quality, shorter-strand silk.

What is "Momme" and why should I care?

Momme (pronounced "moe-me") is the unit used to measure the weight and density of silk, similar to thread count in cotton.

  • Higher Momme = More Silk: A higher number means thicker yarn and a denser weave.
  • Durability: Higher momme silk is more durable and better suited for frequent washing.
  • Expert Tip: Always look for the momme weight in the description. If it’s not listed, it is likely too thin for a high-quality pillowcase.

Is your silk safe for my skin and the environment?

Yes. Pure silk should be free from harmful chemicals. We recommend only buying silk that is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified. This ensures the fabric has been independently tested and is safe for even the most sensitive skin. If you don’t see this certification, the product may not be safe for long-term facial contact.

Is silk difficult to wash?

Not necessarily! High-quality Mulberry silk can be very easy to care for. Our pillowcases are designed to be machine-washable (on a delicate cycle), allowing you to enjoy luxury without the hassle of constant dry cleaning.

What about the fit and closure?

Details matter. Ensure you choose the correct size (Standard, Queen, or King) so the silk doesn't stretch or bunch. We offer options like hidden zippers for a sleek look or envelope closures depending on your personal preference.

Before you buy, check for these four "Must-Haves":)
